Hollywood tunes into anti-piracy audio signals
November 2, 2005 by TomHere’s something a little different…Hollywood is planning to push for film distributors to embed an inaudible watermark in the soundtracks of films released to theaters. Then, if approved by the DVD Forum, HD DVD players would be required to have a special sensor that listens for the watermark and refuses playback if it is found, since it would indicate that the film was pirated. They are also hoping to embed a different watermark in DVD releases which could be used to detect content ripped from official discs, but they anticipate legal troubles in certain territitories due to Fair Use provisions.
