Mark Russinovich, the blogger who first publicly disclosed the Sony Rootkit, has written a new post summarizing the current state of affairs. Even though Sony officially recalled the infected discs two weeks ago, there are reports that Sony hasn’t properly been notifying stores about the recall, and many stores still have the discs on the shelves. (In fact, I was able to find and purchase Van Zant’s “Get Right With The Man” in Tower just before the protest!) Sony also has yet to release the updated uninstaller it promised, and Ben Edelman has discovered that the “phone-home” functionality, which checks for updated album art, could be used to display a banner informing all users of the XCP software of the recall, but Sony has neglected to do so.
Premature Victory Declaration?
