Second Life, CC, and FC.
February 9, 2006 by FredAt our most recent meeting, I talked a bit about the online world of SecondLife and how I was getting interested in it because of the Creative Commons and Free Culture communities that are popping up in it. I mentioned Lessig’s visit and that I’m currently working with the communities on future plans for the Free Culture and Creative Commons in the game. We also talked about how people actually make money with the game, and there is now an article up on Wired about the people who not only make money, but have quit their day jobs, and now rely on SecondLife as their primary source of income.
Jennifer Grinnell, Michigan furniture delivery dispatcher turned fashion designer in cyber space, never imagined that she could make a living in a video game.
Grinnell’s shop, Mischief, is in Second Life, a virtual world whose users are responsible for creating all content. Grinnell’s digital clothing and “skins” allow users to change the appearance of their avatars — their online representations — beyond their wildest Barbie dress-up dreams.
Within a month, Grinnell was making more in Second Life than in her real-world job as a dispatcher. And after three months she realized she could quit her day job altogether.
