Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia on January 31st

Following up Cory Doctorow, next Wednesday we’ll be hosting Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia. The lecture will be held during a class of Evan Korth’s Computer’s and Society course and is also co-sponsored by NYU’s ACM and NYU’s WinC chapters.
Jimmy will be giving a talk entitled “Free culture, transparency, and search.” Read more about Jimmy on his Wikipedia entry here.
We’re extremely lucky to have Jimmy and expect to have a full house, so please arrive early in order to ensure you get a seat.

[…] I went to see Jimmy Wales, of Wikipedia fame, speak today at a talk sponsored by Free Culture NYC. It was a packed house. I tried to take some ZoneTag photos but my fancy new SLVR isn’t that nice. Jimmy skipped most of his talk about Wikipedia (a majority of those attending had edited documents in Wikipedia and were fairly knowledgeable) and skipped ahead to talking about his new project, a search engine sponsored by the Wikia foundation. It turns out the Wikia foundation has a wealth of specialized content. Where Wikipedia only has 320 articles about the Muppets (Jim Henson, Big Bird, etc., Wikia has over 3,000! There is general knowledge appropriate for an encyclopedia and then there’s the specific knowledge that is more appropriate for Wikia. […]

The room was packed well before I got there at 3:25 and by that time a line of about 50 people had formed. Soon after another 100 or so were waiting behind me. By 3:45 the woman manning to door told us all to head home - no one else would be allowed in. I sure wish they had anticipated the crowd and booked a bigger room! […]
